Breast Ultrasonography

BREAST ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Ultrasound imaging of the breast uses sound waves to produce pictures of the internal structures of the breast. It is primarily used to help diagnose breast lumps or other abnormalities your doctor may have found during a physical exam, mammogram or breast MRI.

Breast ultrasonography can be used to distinguish between solid and cystic masses in the breast. It can be used to evaluate a focal mass identified on a mammogram or a palpable mass. It is also used as an adjuvant for biopsy. Because of its low specificity, it is not thought to be a good modality for screening. It cannot replace mammography because it has no ability to detect microcalcifications. Ultrasound can also be used to help guide a biopsy needle into an area so that cells can be taken out and tested for cancer. Ultrasound is safe, noninvasive and does not use radiation.

Preparation: This procedure requires little to no special preparation. Leave jewelry at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be asked to undress from the waist up and to wear a gown during the procedure.
